Pedestrian fatalities and injuries are spiking nationwide, including in Georgia. As a workers’ compensation lawyer in a city as busy as Atlanta, I see the dangers faced by those trying to cross the street every day.
With that said, it’s important that we work as a society toward keeping pedestrians safe. The first step lies in educating walkers themselves. Here are a few tips to get started.
Heed the Rules of the Road
Just like there are rules for drivers, there are equally as important rules for walkers. Watch the signs and signals, and follow them. Never Jaywalk, as that’s one of the leading causing of pedestrian accidents (and can land you a hefty fine).
Keep Alert
Following the rules of walking is very important, but it doesn’t end there. Always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Never assume that a car can see you, or that they will give you the right of way (even if you’re clearly entitled to it). One thing that I see far too much is people getting into dangerous situations because they are more focused on their phones than their immediate surroundings. If you need to send a text, stop walking and make sure to do so in a safe place away from moving traffic. Always make eye contact with surrounding drivers when you need to cross the street.
Use Designated Walking Areas
Obviously you’re not going to walk down the middle of the road with your eyes closed, but there are also grey areas. Avoid those places too unless you need to be in them (in which case spend minimal time in them). Use the crosswalk when you’re crossing the road, and if a sidewalk is a available, use it! If you do need to walk on the road, always use the shoulder and always walk against the oncoming traffic—that’ll make it easier for oncoming cars to see you, and you to see them. Please note: If you’re riding a bicycle, always ride with the traffic, not against it.
Stay Sober
Public intoxication is illegal to ensure the protection of both you and those around you. We all know that drunk driving is too dangerous to try and put into one word, but so is drunk walking. If your mind is impaired, you won’t be able to appropriately exhibit good judgment, which can lead to a devastating accident with a nearby vehicle.
Most people know me as Atlanta’s workers’ compensation lawyer, but I also assist accident victims regularly. Please try to avoid mishaps as much as possible, but if one should occur, I’ll be happy to offer you a complimentary consultation and inform you of your rights.
Stay safe out there, and remember, always use the sidewalk!
